Melissa Shew-Sherman grew up in Pennsylvania and comes from a lineage of textile weavers. There are 17 master weavers in her genealogy, the most famous being Jacob Angstadt, author of The Weavers Patron Book in the 1700’s. Although Melissa has worked with and taught pine needles, Cattails and other natural materials, her passion lies in the recreation of functional baskets of the early settlement periods. “Functional Art” as she refers to it, where a basket had a purpose and was part of the work crew in the family.
