Doug Mason

Hunting, fishing and observing waterfowl in the fields of Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada provide the inspiration and background for Doug’s wildfowl sculptures. This experience and knowledge of his subject’s attitude and anatomy are instrumental in creating his life-like sculptures. Doug designed his first carvings as functional hunting decoys in his late teens. After some prodding and encouragement from his uncle and mentor he began competing in local competitions. His artistry soon vaulted him into competing in the major Canadian and U.S. competitions where he continues to enjoy great success. Since 1989, Doug has competed at the Ward World Championships, the North American Waterfowl Championships, and the Canadian Waterfowl Carving Championships. He has been successful at all levels and for the last 6 years competes at the Masters level. Doug’s accomplishments include, “Best in Shows” at the North American, Canadian National, and Ward World Championships, culminating with a 3rd place in “Best in World” Floating Pairs in 2009 at the Ward World Championships. Over the last 5 years Doug has been part of the Judging fraternity at the Ward World Waterfowl Carving Championships in Ocean City Maryland, USA. He has had the honour of judging the World Rig Competition 3 times in the last 3 years. In 2009 Doug was invited to display his waterfowl sculptures at the prestigious Easton Waterfowl Festival in Easton Maryland, USA. In addition to displaying his artwork at this show he was asked to teach a course in 2014 as part of the festival and was recently asked to teach again this fall. Doug promotes his art form through teaching, seminars and numerous publications in “Wildfowl Carving Magazine”; a major U.S Carving & Collecting Magazine. He has also appeared many times in the Wildfowl Carving and Collecting Calendar. Doug finds the most rewarding aspect of his artistic career is teaching, and watching some of his students successfully compete at the World Championships.
