Victorian fairings are small porcelain ornaments ranging from three to five inches in height. They usually depict a domestic, humorous, or political scene. Victorian china fairings usually depicted a story or a scene that could be quite funny, political or maybe a scene from a house. The term Fairing  can be designated to anything obtained at a Fair, but the term has become exclusively attached to small porcelain figures &  figure groups, and sometimes trinket boxes, match strikers, pin holders and spill holders that were given away as prizes or sold at the local Fair. They were usually humorous and sometimes risque, and for the majority they had captions inscribed on their base. Though English in theme and caption, fairings were in fact made in Germany for export. Demand for these German made items came to an end with the outbreak of world War One.
