As the title suggests, book has some moments that are fondly remembered by Reyburn as well as some historic moments such as how Karsh became a world famous photographer after taking a photo of Churchill in Yugoslavia. There are few touching moments even in this humorous account. Another is ‘The Maestro’ – Dr. Archibald McIndoe , a plastic surgeon who opened up a hospital on East Grinstead. More than his surgeon duties, he did a great job of composing the soldiers, who were disfigured because of war, both physically and mentally.
The New Zealand-born writer Wallace Reyburn distinguished himself with two markedly different works of prose. As a war reporter in 1942, he made it ashore during the Dieppe Raid, where he witnessed and later described how 84 Canadian soliders were killed and 89 forced to surrender. For his efforts he was appointed OBE, and the resulting book (his first), Rehearsal for Invasion (1943), was hailed as a moving account of the ill-fated operation.
