Sophie Barber was born and raised in Prince Edward County and grew up learning how to paint from her mother, Linda Barber. (Linda also shows her work here at The Local Store’s Loft Gallery).

After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Fine Arts, she now lives and paints in her hometown. Her work features animals in strange, dreamlike settings, painted in acrylic on wood with bright, contrasting colors. By placing familiar creatures in unusual environments, a sense of tension is created, making viewers question what they see. The bold colors and textures add to the surreal feeling of each piece. These paintings turn everyday animals into symbols of emotion, memory, and the unknown.
