Brother Konrad- UL Frau von Altötting

Pilgrim relic.  Konrad von Parzham – was a lay brother of the Capuchin order and was canonised in 1934

Johann Birndorfer was the eleventh of twelve children of the farmer Bartholomäus Birndorfer and his wife Gertrude Niedermayer. He worked as a farmhand on his parents’ farm in Rottal which he was supposed to take over, but from childhood he felt drawn to God.

“We must learn to pray from Venushof-Hansl,” people in Parzham said of Johann Birndorfer. And: “If he doesn’t become a saint, no one will.” In 1849 he entered the.      Capuchin monastery of St. Anna in Altotting,  which has borne his name since 1961, and was given the religious name of Konrad. From 1852 onwards he served as a gatekeeper there for 41 years. Since the Capuchins were responsible for looking after the pilgrims in Altötting, this was a very labor-intensive task. He was characterized by his zeal for prayer, constant willingness to serve and self-sacrificing love. He was loved by the people and revered by the pilgrims. Brother Konrad died in 1894. Konrad found his final resting place in the monastery church. It was renamed Brother Konrad Church in 1953.
