Sheffield Silver Plate Child’s Pusher. Stamped “CHEERIO HENRY ELLIOTT & CO. SHEFFIELD”

Not sure why it is stamped “Cheerio” as I don’t think the Cheerio cereal we know today was invented in that late 1800s.

Food Pushers were common in Victorian society when it was rude for anyone, even children, to touch food with their hands. Kids were given food pushers to help them rake their dinner onto their fork.

Henry Elliott & Sons

Few sources mention Henry Elliott & Sons. Its cutlery canteens and cased sets of beef carving knives (made with shear steel), with fork and sharpening steel, were occasionally advertised in the Sheffield press between 1906 and 1907. They were sold by Turners, 138 Westbar.

The cutlery manufacturer (or merchant) was possibly Henry Elliott (c.1846-1913), who had been born in Sheffield. By 1911, he was living at 81 Barber Road, with his wife Emma, and working as a cutlery clerk. He was associated as manager with McClory’s on Milton Street. This firm specialised, like Elliott, in table cutlery and cased carving sets.

Henry Elliott died on 22 July 1913 and was buried at Norton Cemetery. His wife died in 1944, aged 98.
