“Black River” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

Black River –  Vicki Emlaw was one of the icons of Prince Edward County that formed our image of the place as we contemplated moving.  Vicki runs Vicki’s Veggies and is an heirloom tomato specialist more than willing to impart her knowledge and seeds. Black River community has recently become a hub not only of fabulous vegetables but also artists who have their own little local annual arts festival in May.

“Lake On The Mountain” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

“To arrive in Prince Edward County is to cross the water.  We are an island, after all.  If you’re taking the Loyalist Parkway from the East you’ll pull right up onto the Glenora Ferry and make your way to the County.  Above your head lies the mysterious Lake On the Mountain. Perched atop a large hill and with no discernible source for it’s fresh water, it’s a provincial park and a great spot for a picnic or a paddle (and a pizza).”  ….. Marc

“Sandbanks Provincial Park” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

“With eight kids, the only holidays my parents could afford were long days at the beach. My favourite part was when they’d pull out the hibachi and the seemingly bottomless picnic basket.  Sandbanks Provincial Park is a jewel for Ontario’s beach lovers.  Long sandy beaches with turquoise water, surrounded by campgrounds, nature walks, rivers and the largest baymouth dunes the world.  And you can still barbecue on the beach”….. “Wellington” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

Wellington’s main street plays host to four star restaurants and mansions turned b&b, but for so many it’s the park that is the heart of town. Tucked in between cottages and the United church, Wellington Park leads downward to the lapping, shaley shores of Lake Ontario. Celebrations draw grownups to the gazebo while kids transform the play structure into ships of space and sea and time.

In Spring 2015 I was lucky to see the Alex Colville exhibit at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. In Ms. Norene’s grade 13 Art History class I was impressed by Colville‘s mysterious, half-explained stories painted with clean perfection. Seeing his work in such large numbers revealed how much influence that early exposure has had on my illustration work.

“Picton” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

Picton – The Regent Theatre is one of the last remaining small-town cinemas, lighting up the core of main street Picton with it’s vintage neon glow.  Picton is where the business of the County mixes.  Tractors loaded with hay line up with camper vans to parade through the centre of town.

“Bloomfield” – Marc Keelan-Bishop

11×17 inches

Bloomfield is a beautiful little village, strategically centrally located at the crossroads to Belleville, Picton, Sandbanks Provincial Park and Wellington.  Stop to shop, or to try handmade ice cream at Slickers, and maybe check out a more comfortable saddle at the Bloomfield Bicycle Co.
